On my way now to the Deadly Ink mystery conference, a small, intimate gathering of about a hundred readers and authors to talk about our favorite subject: mysteries, of course. It's held in Rockaway, New Jersey, and while a fair number of authors and fans are regulars, I always like to hold it up as an example of a really good conference to attend for people who have never been to one before. As I said, it's small and intimate, there are interesting panels (I see there's one this year on Sherlock Holmes) and enough events for everyone to talk to everyone else. You go home from these as you do from most of the ones I've attended over the years with a lot of new friends and ideas for new reading. If you've never been to a conference, and you're in the New York City area, think seriously about joining us next summer!
