A friend sent me an email this week to say that she had never read any Margery Allingham novels and asking where she should start. Rather than "The Case of the Late Pig," which is featured on the podcast this week, I would recommend "Flowers for the Judge." It is more fully developed, with a number of memorable and very sympathetic characters. There are thriller elements, as always in a Campion story, but there is also a most ingenious and fairly-clued "impossible crime" mystery to be solved. I am particularly fond of the ending of this book, which is really beautifully written. It's a good place to meet both Albert Campion and his creator. I reviewed it on the podcast last year, and you can listen to it here.
