After many years, I think I have finally come to understand and appreciate one of the great fictional detectives of the 20th century: Commissaire Jules Maigret, the creation of Georges Simenon.
When I first tried Simenon's books, many years ago, I must admit I didn't care that much for them - they struck me as being more social commentary, with a dash of police procedure thrown in, than classic mystery. But I recently picked up a couple of Simenon's novels, and I'm delighted to say I was wrong.
I have a couple on hand now - just finished reading Maigret and the Wine Merchant, which is one of the later books, and I'll review this one and a couple of others on the podcast in coming weeks. But I'm very glad to make the re-acquaintance of Maigret.
